THE DOGS

Dogs assigned to Clark Air Base during the 1970s.

There were approximately 120-130 dogs at Clark at any given time. Most were patrol dogs. There were about twenty drug dogs and about ten bomb dogs. Almost all were German Shepherds. Back in those days the Air Force was still engaged in purchasing Shepherds, although some of the drug dogs were smaller dogs with a greater sense of detection, such as Dachsunds or Beagles.

We were a family in the Philippines, but our dogs were the best and most trusted companions we had. Many a time we ventured into territory far too dangerous to go into alone, but our dogs were right there at the front, boldly leading the way.

Across the street from where the kennels front office building was, sits the K-9 graveyard. To this day these gallant warriors maintain their vigil over Clark Air Base in the Republic of the Philippines.
