It was great to find your site. It brought back many memories of my days
as a "dawg handler". I spent almost 24 fantastic years in the
USAF as a handler, trainer/supervisor, and as a kennelmaster. I never made
it to the P.I. but I tried. I started in ay 68 as a sentry dog handler.
Spent time at Lockbourne AFB, Ohio, Korat RTAFB, Thailand, Fairchild AFB,
Washington, Andrews AFB, Maryland, Scott AFB, Illionis, Andersen AFB,
Guam, DOD Dog Center, Lackland AFB, Texas, and Castle AFB, Calif. I
retired in ept 91. I now work for U.S. Customs as a Narc Dog Handler in
San Diego, Calif. Would like to hear from anyone I was stationed with.

ex-Clark LE guy about how a US Navy boat approached a little too close and
the SP fired some rounds over her bow!! Feel free to link me at:

Arrived February 77 to Clark, man it was hot and humid when we got off
that Stretch 8. Best I can remember, I only knew Jeff Gates. Was stationed
with Jeff at Kinchloe in Michigan. Got to know some very nice people
during my stay. People I remember,,, Of course Debra Harrison from RP.
Ramiro and Debbie Garza. Debbie Blancette, and Ellen Thomas, Granthom, his
picture is in here somewhere. There are many more. Took a lot of pictures
while I was there, a lot! I first listend to Genesis at a friend's house
off base. Got to know him through a mutual friend at Dog School. Bonnie
Harwood was her name. Yes It's all comming back now. I was Posted close to
the runway, the flight line side. It was late afternoon, was on post maybe
an hour or two. I heard Bob on the radio, I could see him pull into the
Jet Test Cell area the other side of the Active runway.I continued to the
South with Lobo, Me and my dog and an MSD can. "Post something or
other,to Shotgun radio check." It wasn't long after Shotgun
dispatched Greg Davis to Jet Test Cell. I could here Greg now and then on
my shit radio. Then I saw many vehicles responding. I headed back North
with Lobo to get a better look. Bob died that day. We were all deeply
moved by this. Debra and I went to the flight line, everyone was in their
Blues that day as we watched, Bob's body was loaded onto the plane. Most
of us went to the little bar outside Shotgun. It was pretty quiet. There
are many people I remember, their faces only. Some by Name. I think I grew
up at the P.I., like so many other young men and women. I went to customs
in Jun of 79, said good bye, and got on the plane back to the world. I
still have those Genesis albums, Thanks Bob. So whatever happened to Paul
Neuman and Roger and Sieborne. What about Tony. Hello Ed 26 Green. Paul

I was stationed at Clark from Sep 77 to Jan 79. Many of the names on this
site are familiar, but there are a few I haven't seen....Ellis
Atkins(black guy), Atkins (white guy) Michael Horton, and Hinton. I worked
Ben initially and later worked Thor. I ear after I left he ate up every
handler he had until he put one in the hospital. Then he was put down
right before I returned in 1982. I remember the girl with her top off in
the bomb dump, getting the girls in the bomb dump, slap flare fights in
the b mb dump, cooking in the bomb dump and all the other craziness that
took place in the bomb dump. The thing I remeber the most was the pride
and the brotherhood shared by all the handlers at Clark. And even though
we were guarding trash, fenceline, exting ishers, and generals (and
sometimes it felt like the flightline itself) we were proud to serve and
we were even prouder of our profession. I didn't know Bob well, we worked
different shifts....but as T-Bone said, he was a legend and all the new
handlers ere in awe of his catches. Although a blur, as much of my first
tour was, I believe I was in the Underground Bar when I heard of Bob's
murder. His name wasn't important at the time, he was one of ours. We all
dropped everything and ran back to base. T uly the sadest day of my
career. Thanks for the memories.

I arrived at Clark in april 91 and was assigned as underdog for C Flight

eruption by intruders. I had 15 teams and I put 3 of them just on Batanes.
Many stories to tell there. SSgt Greg Bacher was the night shift flight

someon named Jim Beam. Ha Ha. Any how this is a great site and as soon as

worked with you in RP. I was also on TSgt Schwartz's flight. Anyone
remember his radio classes after a night of radio horseplay. His
monotonous voice on a tape reciting radio discipline. I was a SSgt at the
time, worked mostly SPCDS tower and Desk Sgt at "Shotgun". I
remember Smitty, Gambert and Lopez. Great times! Anyone remember 4th of
July, '80 or '81, t ere was no fireworks show. So we got together with
everyone on flight and told them to check out slap flares. When the RP
Desk Sgt gave the word everyone shot them off. Me and Mark Bearance were
on Lily Hill with an M79 grenade launcher shooting off fl res. Then we

I unfortunately missed some of the glory days of being a K-9 handler in
the 70's at Clark. Some of the troops I was stationed with at Clark from
87 - 91 told me some great stories, some of them were unusal. Some of the
better stories I was able to pass on (I'm sure they were completely
butchered over the years) to some of my troops and the new handlers. There
is nothing more satisfying then working a police dog. After working K-9
foot patrol for 3 1/2 years in the PI I PCS'd to Mather AFB in Sacramento.
I worked a bomb dog for two years and worked some great details. Then I
PCS'd to Peterson AFB in Colorado Springs, CO handling a narcotics dog.
All of my stateside assignments were great but nothing like the thrill of
the chase in the dense vegitation of Clark. Soon I will be picking up a
K-9 position in my current position working for the West Sacramento PD. I
think all of the training and experience I had at Clark will carry over
into the civilian sector and someday save my life. So to all of the
handlers that came before me and paved the way and established the K-9
corp of today - I SALUTE YOU! Tod Sockman K-9 Handler Clark 12/87 thru

Risinger(Ricebug) and Capt Kent Groth. Finding this site really hit home,
especially the tribute to Bob Gra . Thought there were only a few fading
memories of Bob out there. Glad to see someone did something to pay
tribute to him. I knew Bob only in passing, used to meet him in the
Cantina in the "SHOTGUN" compound during shift change. Very
quiet and dedicat d person. Sifting thru the guestbook, I found a few
recognizeable names, McKay of the Horse Patrol and Poynter. Damn, those
were the days. Never had an assigned like that again. I'll never forget
those mid shifts in the bomb dump, tower #3 that was by the road that lead
to the Mabalacat Gate. The K-9 handlers would meet at the backside and
roast hotdogs. I remember this one female dog handler who rode in an M-151
jeep around the dump without her top on. She was blond and built to the
hilt. The p ota page of the K-9 area and guardmount area brought back
memories too. I have a few of me in front of the base armory and with the
"PIG", the armored car that we used to transfer funds around the
base. I remember "BIG JOE" Daigle like it was yesterday I
remeber seeing him grading the perimeter road by the elephant cage/Negrito
area on a holiday weekend, his cigar hanging out of his mouth, looking
more like a Navy Sea Bee. Well, that's my story. I got you bookmarked now

I was assigned to Clark AB from Aug 81 thru Feb 83. I was assigned to
Sundown. One night, soon after I was there, I was caught sleeping at the
SatCom facility by the K-9 Flt. Chief. I heard a radio squelch and got up
and reported my post as all secure and he replied "How do you know?"
I looked down and saw Sundown was snoozing too. I only dodged an Articale
15 by a set of unique cirmstances. I later heard that Bob Rose, Sundown's
previous handler, had been known to relax on post occaisionally. Well,
Sundown and I worked things out and we had a great time and stayed awake
on those sometime very long mids. One night I released Sundown at some
noise and movement in the Drop Zone and followed him in. I soon realized
we were both running to a Water Boo. I recalled him and we both headed
back to the fish ponds. Needless to say, I was laughing at that for awhile
and I still chuckle. I worked a lot nights with Gary Schultz and Buster
too. After working Sundown, I was assigned to Jessie, a patrol/drug dog. I
had a great time working with, Derek Duncan and Konic, looking for dope.
What a hoot that was. This sight is absolutely fantastic, I recognize a
lot of names on your list of handlers that were there when I was. Thanks

I forgot to mention...the legend of Bob Gray was still living while I was
there in the late '80s. Also, the part about strait legs being afraid to
follow us isn't a bust on them. I remember having to go out there without
Krash (he was on medical profile) and being scared shitless, and it was
during a coup attempt to boot. When Krash was with me, nobody could come
withing 400 meters without me knowing they were there. Without Krash, as
long as I didn't step on them, I wouldn't know they were there. I don't no
how anyone can go into a jungle at night without a dog, and I don't envy
anyone who's had to do it.

I was stationed at Clark from March of '88 to March of '90. I am still a "Guardian
of the Night", but no one calls us by that name anymore. My dog's
name was Kurass, but I called him Krash. I haven't thought about those
days in a long time. After read ng some of the posts in your guestbook, a
lot of memories came back to me. I remember singing "Dogs of War"
by Pink Floyd with the other dog handlers on my flight at a bar called the
Zoo. I was on "Dragon" Flt on the Security side, by the way. I
rememb r seeing the eyes of another dog team reflecting moonlight as they
crossed a stream to catch up with me. I remember "strait legs"
being too afraid to follow us into the "Wash". I remember
waiting for two hours for help to come the first time I caught in ruders,
because nobody knew where Kilo-51 was...not strait legs anyway, and being
as it was my first night on post, I didn't know either. I remember
standing in the bathroom at the Detroit air port and thanking God I was
home. But most of all, I remembe the strength of the friendships I made
there. I've run into one or two here and there since. Got a phone call
from a couple. But I haven't heard from any of the gang in at least six
years now. I will never have friends like that again. And the sad p rt
is...I know it. I don't know what happened to Krash Dawg. I heard a friend
of mine who I called Kathleen (I can't remember her real name) worked him
after I left.

I was stationed at Camp John Hay Aug 90-Jun 91. Kennelmaster/Trainer/LE
Flight Chief. John Hay closed in Jun 91 (During Pinatubo eruptions).
Reassigned to the 3rd SPS (Clark AB) in Jun 91 and assumed duties as Asst
Kennelmaster and NCOIC of MWD Trainin . Worked at the kennels until the
gates closed in Nov 91. Interesting note: In Jun 1991, prior to the
eruptions of Mt Pinatubo over 20,000 military and civilian personnel were
evacuated (never to return) from Clark Air Base. The eruptions of Mt
Pinatu o had a devastating impact on the local economy. Combined with the
fact that over 2000 fully furnished military housing units were left
unoccupied, the intruder rate skyrocketed. For several years leading up to
the eruptions (maybe longer?) there was a s ick K-9 release policy in
place. Handlers could not release their dog unless confronted with a life
threatening situation. With the increase of thefts and intruder activity
following the eruptions, the release policy was relaxed. In the first
month foll wing the change in the release policy (Aug 91), there were an
average of 2-3 releases a night. Initially, the dogs were not following-up
once released and were reluctant to bite. After several years of biting
American K-9 handlers dressed in BDU's the d gs were clueless. During this
period we had several Filipinos (DOD) dog handlers working with us. We
took these handlers, dressed them in civvies, and conducted post
penetrations with hidden wraps. After a few weeks, the bite rate
dramatically improved and continued until our departure in Nov 91. We
recorded over 60 dog bites during this period. It was not uncommon for the
PAF (Philippine Air Force) guards to engage in fire fights along the
perimeter during this time. I am unaware of any of our handle s involved
in this activity other than being shot at by intruders. We had some
injuries but thankfully, nothing serious. I was interested in reading the
material on Gray. I can assure that while I was at Clark, his name was
spoken with reverence and adm ration. There was a plaque honoring him in
the break room. I believe the plaque was sent to the Security Force Museum
at Lackland, but I'm not sure. Enjoyed your site. MSgt Mark Parrish HQ

the best dog I ever had, I ended up with a couple of bites, off post of

the end we were all congradulated and some were giving accomadaition

I was stationed at Clark from 1977-1978. I remember when Bob Gray was
killed. I was at the outdoor Theater and remember seeing a lot of slap
flares in the air for what seememd forever. When I went home out in
Sapangbato, the gate Guard told me what happened and to be prepeared for a
call out if necessary. The next morning I rode in the Alarm Response
Vehicle (Clark51 I think) ( I was LE) and we got the call to go to the
flightline to assist with the perimeter. I remember they tried to smoke
out the badguys with slap flares. This caused the K-9 handlers to evacuate
the washout and gave the badguys the opoortunity to run to Mabalacat. I
had heard that Colonel Daigle had wanted to flood the washout with JP4
Fuel but got vetoed on that. That was my first experience with a fellow
Officer being killed in the line of duty. Unfortunately it is not the
last. I understand the loss everyone feels from Bob's death. I lost a
friend and fellow Police Officer 4 years ago and I was only a couple of
miles away on patrol when he was shot by a burglar. Mabuhay to all my

Served for a short period of time in the Air Force Security Police. I was
a Law Enforcement Specialist assigned to the 475th SPS Yokota AB Japan. I
was discharged from the service prematurely for what My Squadron commander
described as "Unsatisfactory Performance". This was back in
December of 1982 with about 14 months of active duty service. Despite all
the troubles I had while in uniform not a day goes by that I don't think
about being in the SP'S. I truly loved the Air force and The SP career
field. I was devestated after My discharge and I don't think I will ever
be the same even after all these years. I have become a productive member
of civilian life despite My misfortune. I am employed as an Alarm
Techinician With ADT Secuity Services I have been there for the past 14
years. A few years ago I took up playing the bagpipes which takes up alot
of My spare time now. I had a bout with alcoholism (which I am in a 12
step recovery program for now) and a failed attempt at marrige. Although
Civilian Life seemed to have dealt Me a better hand of cards, I still wish
I could have made it in the service. For a short time I was proud to have
worn thw "Badge and Beret" and took pride in what it stood for.
I will always say that the Air Force SP'S are the best. With that I will
close for now have a Merry Christmas, and all the best for New Year.

A lot of fond memories of good times and friends that I'll never forget,
and then there is a lot that I wish I could sweep under the rug and forget
that it ever happen or ever was. I'm still trying to come to grips with
this episode in my life that forever change a naive, impressionable 18

I was startioned at Clark AB from 1977-1980. Started out working a drug
dog named Mister, who died shortly after and then was assigned Konic
(Y264), who was know for a powerful hit when released (probably because he
only had one good eye). In late 1978 r early 1979, I became the trainer on
"B" Flight. Had some interesting handlers, but more important we
had one hellacious group of dogs. Some of them were Thunder, Bojangles,
Joey, Bullett, Max (Z123), Raider, Keller (briefly), Crazy Henry, and
Smokey. While I went on to instruct at Lackland (1981-1988), manage K-9 at
a MAJCOM (USAFE-1988-1992), back to Lackland (1992-1997); I often think
the best days EVER were those at Clark in the 70s. Currently I am still
working in a K-9 job for the Federal Aviat on Administration. Great page

Monty--I were assigned to Clark Aug 76-Aug 78. I was NCOIC of the Drug
Detector Dog Section and later became one of the trainers(Dr. Frankindog,
as Paul Newman, C Flt, nicknamed me. You should have seen his cartoons he
drew all the time in the front room of the office--great artist and
humorist!) Took a COT to PACAF MWD Training Center, Kadena AB, Okinawa,
and became NCOIC until stationed at Andrews AFB, Washington, DC. where I
retired in Sep 87. I continued in law enforcement, Special US Deputy
Marshall with the Justice Dept., DOD Police and VA, as well. I recently
retired and can devote time to my woodworking. Cathy--worked Prince Z133
while in the Drug Dog Section for 16 months. I became disgusted with it
and requested to be transferred to RP a few days after Bob Gray was
killed. I took Prince with me due to lack of drug dog handlers and had the
time of my life with C Flt out on post. Best bunch of guys I ever worked
with and the hardest partying bunch with John Grammer as the ring leader!
I was fortunate enough to get an instructor assignment with Monty at the
PACAF Dog School. Worked with a crazy crew- "Snuffy" Boyd,
Charlie Jones, I.O. Williams, "Duck" Williams, Fote, Chuck
Allen, John Brewer, Mike LeBlanc, & John Flowers(Supply). Going back
to the world, I had orders for Grand Forks, ND, and Monty had orders for
Blytheville, AR. Somewhere in the middle of Kansas wasn't my idea of
commuting distance. It was the end of my enlistment so I got out to follow
Monty. I completed my degree, grew up and became a civilian contracting
officer (Navy and Army Corps of Engineers) and recently retired.

I was stationed twice at clark. 1981-83 and again1989 through the closing
day. In fact i had left the unit briefly and was assigned to the 6009th
Securty Police Training Squadron ( Commando Warriors ) . After the
eruption of Mt. Pinatubo I returned to assist at the MWD section where we
were assigning the DOD Guards to work the dogs that were not being sent
back to the states. It was a very hectic time with many intruders on the
yard after the eruption from the time we returned from the Argricutural
Collge at Mt. Aryat. I worked with Frank Ortiz and Jonn Olsen on D flight
initially during my last tour. Luk 162N was the last dog I was assigned,
actually after convincing Msgt Shed not to have him put to sleep following
his multiple attacks on various handlers. I too was later jobed by this
dog and suffered puncture wounds on my hand and arm. Anyway Luk would
finally get a bad guy and ate an intruder pretty good at Sapangbato (
about time ) I could go on and tell stories , but it would take too long
however i like many others recieved letters of appreciation and medals for
my service. I will never forget Clark and those I served with. Gerald A.

I was assigned to the 3rd LES from March of 75 to March of 77, worked
Base Police then Customs. Got to know MANY of the handlers and their dogs.
The best one that I can remember was at the Dining Out in 1975 at the NCO
Club; The CSP was Col Joe "Big Joe" Daigle. He had assigned all
the dogs ranks, and they got promoted based on bites for patrol dogs or
finds for Narc and Bomb dogs. Well, the Wing commander (Col Miller) at the
time was OK with the idea, provided that no dog would outrank him. (He was
worried, because many of the dogs outranked their handlers.) His rule was
that if any dog could physically salute him, then the dog could make
Brigadier General. Well, at the dining out, Col Daigle announced that one
wet, rainy day, the Wing King was in the CSP Office for a meeting, and all
of a sudden the door burst open, and in walks then SSgt (Now Major) John
Probst with his MWD "Morgan". Before anyone could say anything,
John ordered Morgan to "Sit", thenm "Sit Up", and then
"Salute the Colonel!" Morgan sat up on his hindquarters and
proceeded to place his right paw over his right eya in proper military
fashion. Thus earning him the rank and title "Brigadier General
Morgan." Greetings to all who remember me and survived Angeles City!
