NIGHTS ON POST

Time spent on post was hours upon hours of tedious nothingness punctuated by moments of sheer excitement and adrenaline rushes as intruder activity occurred.

Photo sets courtesy of Bill Louk, Stan Jack, Ed Green, Dan Weaver, Steve Gambert, Michael Ging, Eddie Fipps and Keith Usery.

Top Row, Left to Right:

1. Photo was taken sometime in the late afternoon. The location looks to be either right outside or right inside the bomb dump. The driver is Resources Flight Chief, MSgt Frank Ayotte.

2. While at Clark there was a need for entry control into certain areas. Photo is of a controlled area badge for gaining access to Area I (the bomb dump).

3. Bill Louk (left) and Tom Mitchell kill off some of the boredom by playing chess on tank five at POL.

4. Two handlers playing chess on tank five at the POL compound. The handler on the right is Mike Ward.

5. The entry control point at POL.

6. The elephant cage where we worked a post called Circle Antenna.

7. The fenceline taken from Mitchell Highway, just to the south of the active flightline.

8. Dave Grantham on post on the east side with another of the legend dogs, Joey.

9. Lt Bob Stahl, one of the shift commanders. As Ed Green remembers, he was one of the good ones. If you were an officer and respected by K-9 that was quite an accomplishment. Not too many were. For me, it was Capt Kent Groth.

Second Row, Left to Right:

1. TSgt Joe Karkoski of EOD and Ed Green enjoy a refreshment with Filipino kids while away from their assigned areas.

2. Two Pararescue troops (PJs) in red berets. Second from right is a horse patrol troop and second from left is Ed Green. The four pose during anti-terrorist training.

3. Dan Weaver taken somewhere on the east side of Clark. Most likely in the Mabalacat Washout area. Note the small M-16, commonly referred to as a GAU.

4. Left to right: Mike Mason (Trainer), Mike Ward and Mike Hedrick taken one night on post.

5. Dan Weaver, taken in Mabalacat Washout one afternoon.

6. Dan Weaver in the bomb dump under the bridge spanning CMS 5 and CMS 6. This was a popular K-9 hang out while killing off another boring night in the bomb dump. Dan has spray painted his initials on the concrete underside of the bridge. Many of us did while there.

7. "C" Flight's flight chief, John Grammer. As in the previous photo this one was also taken under the bomb dump bridge as John also paints his was to immortality.

8. Steve Gambert (Gumby) and Marc Hodgdon (Hodge) taken in the bomb dump sometime during 1979.

9. The bomb dump, probably during the 1978 timeframe. In front of the jeep are Bob Denniston (Bobaloo), Steve Gambert (Gumby) and Frank Beech. Sitting on top of the jeep is Mike Ward. Unknown who is in the jeep.

Third Row, Left to Right:

1. Post Check.

2. Waiting for the posting truck

3. Handler in the back of a tone and a half wating for a ride to post.

4-6. An open area, probably somewhere on the eastside behind the bomb dump.

7. Finishing a sweep of Mabalacat. The bridge in the background is a railroad bridge offbase, used by the Mabalacat Rocket.

8. Silhouettes of a couple of handlers standing on a cliff overlooking one of the washouts.

9. A handler in the elephant grass in ambush fashion.

Fourth Row, Left to Right:

1. Sykes being post inspected.

2. More handlers on a ton and a half.

3. A handler awaiting relief in the morning.

4. Handlers and their dogs gathered around while conducting a sweep.

5-6. A weapons carrier posting out dog teams on a mid shift.

7. Eddie Fipps and Keller at what appears to be POL.

8. Eddie Fipps hanging out by one of the Deuce and a halfs.

9. Eddie Fipps and Ron Steele hamming it up.

Fifth Row, Left to Right:

1. Reggie Robinson, Keith Usery and his dog Fritz, and Tom Dolan in the Bomb Dump.

2. Bob Denniston and Ray Sanchez with Keith Usery's dog Fritz in the Bomb Dump.
